The opening day of the deer hunting season brought death to both a hunter and his quarry Tuesday afternoon as Medios Tessier, 67, of Adams, R.D. 2, was fatally stricken while dressing a spike horn buck he had shot in a wooded area in southern Jefferson county.
Tessier, who has hunting alone, was found dead beside the animal at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday one mile south of Babbit’s corners in a wooded area off Route 178.
The body was released to the Piddock funeral home, Adams.
Tessier was discovered by another hunter, Lyle Caulkins, Honeyville, who notified authorities.
Deputy James R. Hagan and Deputy Gordon Kenfield investigated for the sheriff’s department.
Caulkins told deputies that he heard a shot about two hours before finding Tessier’s body, and said that was apparently when Tessier killed the deer.
Later, Caulkins noticed a trail of blood on the snow-covered ground and followed it to a clump of trees located a half mile off the road.
Tessier, who had started to dress the deer, was found slumped beside the animal.
The funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Adams, Rev. Bruce E. Whitehead, rector, officiating. A Masonic service will be held at the Piddock funeral home, Adams, Thursday at 8 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home, Adams, Thursday afternoon and evening. Burial will be in Rural cemetery, Adams.
Mr. Tessier is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lilliam Fildes Tessier; one son, John H of Adams; one daughter, Mrs. Richard (Lila) Spry, Adams; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph, Syracuse, and Albert, Rutland, Vt.; and a sister, Mrs. Leland (Margaret) Lashbrook, Buffalo.
Mr. Tessier was born December 29, 1892 in Gouverneur, son of Mose and Anna Charette Tessier. He attended schools in Fine, and was a logging contractor in the Adirondacks and New England for many years.
He married Lillian Fildes July 29, 1919, at Elk Lake, Ontario, Canada. For the last ten years the couple had operated a farm on the Allendale road, Adams.
